Skipping or jumping rope strengthens the muscles that support the tendons and ligaments of the knees, feet and ankles, according to Human Kinetics. Skipping rope also builds endurance in the calves, quadriceps, hamstrings and glutes.

While skipping rope benefits the cardiovascular system and burns as many calories as running an eight-minute mile, it imposes some stress on the knees, ankles and hips, according to Dr. Peter Shulman for WebMD. When used for rehabilitation, skipping rope improves balance and overall strength, but it is best employed after a more gentle exercise regimen that includes activities such as swimming, stationary bicycling or jogging.
