How do you get a musty smell out of clothes?

Removing the musty smell from clothing is often challenging, and primarily involves determining the source of the smell. Musty smells can often be removed from clothing by placing them into the freezer for a couple of hours.

Often laundry produces a musty odor due to a problem with either the clothes washer or dryer. Musty washing machines are generally the main culprit, which can be fixed by running it through a cycle without clothing, on the hottest setting, and using bleach or detergent. Keeping the lid to the washing machine open to allow the machine to air out between washings can also help.
