The name of Captain Horatio Pugwash's boat was the Black Pig. Captain Pugwash, his crew and the Black Pig were created by British cartoonist John Ryan and made their first appearance in a comic strip in 1950.

Captain Pugwash appeared in a series of children's books that were also written by Ryan. The series comprised more than 20 books and was published over a 40-year period. A successful Captain Pugwash television series was aired by the BBC from 1957 to 1967, with distinctive animation consisting of handmade cardboard puppets. A final series of Captain Pugwash was filmed and aired in 1998.
