The name of the federal prison in Butner, North Carolina is FCC Butner. This is a men's Federal Correctional Complex and includes a medical correctional facility that is the largest such facility in the Bureau of Prisons system.

The complex is located in Durham County in north central North Carolina. There are four separate units making up FCC Butner, with varying degrees of security, ranging from low to medium I and medium II.

The medical facility (Federal Medical Complex) at Butner is not rated per security and houses inmates of all levels battling cancer and other serious diseases. There is also a drug treatment program at the facility. After his arrest in 2008, Bernie Madoff was sent to FCC Butner.
