VisiCalc was the first spreadsheet computer program. In 1979, this application was originally released for microcomputers having Apple II as the operating system.

According to the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, Daniel Bricklin and Bob Frankston co-invented the software program VisiCalc for Apple II microcomputers. The name "VisiCalc" was an abbreviation for "visible calculator."

VisiCalc was the application that transformed the microcomputer into a serious business tool. VisiCalc was an instant success upon its release to the commercial market, with over 700,000 copies sold within the first 6 years, and approximately 1 million copies of the software being sold during the product's lifetime.
