What is the name of the holy book of Islam?

The holy book of Islam is called the Quran. The book's name is sometimes also spelled "Qur'an" or "Koran." Its name comes from an Arabic root that means "the act of recitation."

The Quran's origins trace back to the Prophet Muhammad, the founder of Islam. On one of Muhammad's prayerful visits to an isolated cave on Mount Hira, the angel Gabriel appeared to him and commanded him to recite. These recitations, which occurred over a period of 23 years, became the text of the Quran. Thought to be divine words of God, the Quran consists of 114 chapters written in classical Arabic.
