Some of the most important Italian ports include Naples at the Thyrennian Sea, Genoa in Northern Italy, and the Port of Gioia Tauro in Southern Italy. Being a peninsula, Italy is home to dozens of seaports which form an important part of the economy.
Many of Italy's best-known cities are seaports as well, due to the geography of the country, which is bordered by sea on three sides. Venice, Trieste, Ortona, Siracusa, and Livorno are some of the better-known seaports in Italy. The Port of Gioia Tauro accounts for one-third of the Italian sea traffic and is the seventh-largest container port in Europe, located along the busy maritime corridor that connects the ports of Gibraltar and Suez.
