The name of the machine that cleans the ice at rinks is a Zamboni, according to About. The machine is named after its creator, Frank Zamboni. In 1949, Zamboni patented his Model A Zamboni Ice Resurfacer.
Before the modern ice resurfacer was developed, workers had to prepare the ice surface with tractors and a hose, a process that took quite some time. Beginning in 1942, Frank Zamboni began designing a machine that performed the entire ice resurfacing process in a fraction of the time. He modified a tractor by adding a blade that shaved the ice smooth. Zamboni also added a device that swept up the ice and a hose that sprayed down water that froze in minutes.
