A point of land extending into a body of water is known as a peninsula. A peninsula extends out into the water while still being connected to a larger section of land.
Peninsulas are also sometimes called a promontory or a cape, and are commonly used in the marine industry as a docking place for fishers. Some famous capes around the world include the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa, and Cape Cod in Massachussetts. Florida is an example of a peninsula, because it is surrounded by water on three sides. Peninsulas are sometimes only connected to a larger body of land by a very skinny strip called an isthmus.
