Why does pond water become cloudy?

Animal and plant matter create murky appearances in ponds. Inorganic matter in the form of clay or mud also renders the water unclear. An absence of healthy bacteria allows problematic nutrients and sludge to accumulate.

Cloudy pond water is classified into two categories: organic and inorganic. Organic matter creates sludge that forms at the bottom of ponds, causing a filmy appearance. Inorganic matter takes the form of clay or earth that may have slipped into the pond, and lighter deposits of inorganic matter float on the surface.

Natural bacteria can be added to ponds to eliminate organic waste. A natural phosphate binder clears any mineral or clay particles within ponds. A concentrated water clarifier removes organic and inorganic solids from ponds.
