To clear a cloudy pool, backwash the filtration system, and then use a pool water test kit to test the pH and total alkalinity levels of the water. You need a pool water test kit and a pH decreasing or increasing solution.
- Backwash the filtration system
Reverse the flow of water in the filter until the waste line is free of debris.
- Dip the tester in the water
Open a pool water test kit, and find the plastic tester. Dip the tester in the water at a depth of 18 inches.
- Consult the instructions
Consult the instructions in the test kit to determine which solution to use, how much to use and where to use the solution.
- Determine pH and total alkalinity levels
Continue to follow instructions until you determine the pH and total alkalinity levels of the water.
- Determine which solution to use
Purchase a pH decreaser if the pH level is above the normal range of 7.2 and 7.6 and the total alkalinity level is above the range of 80 and 125 parts per million for plaster and gunite pools and 125 and 150 ppm for other pools. Purchase a pH increaser if the levels are below these ranges.
- Add the solution
Read the manufacturer's instructions, and add the solution to the pool.
