The main brick wall patterns are running bond, basket weave, herringbone, Spanish bond, diagonal and diagonal basket weave, according to This Old House. Running bond is the most common type of brick pattern, using bricks of the same size laid on top of one another and alternating placement by level.
A basket-weave pattern looks like a checkerboard made out of brick pairs, while herringbone is an angled design set at either 45 or 90 degrees. Stack bond is even simpler than running bond, with the bricks placed one on top of the other in a straight line. Spanish bond puts one half-size brick in the center of 1-square-foot area and encloses it with four full-size bricks.
