The United States government is comprised of the executive branch, the judicial branch and the legislative branch. The powers of the federal government were distributed among three co-equal branches by those at the Constitutional Convention to prevent a dictatorship or tyranny due to the consolidation of power.

The executive branch carries out federal laws and directs national defense and foreign policy. The President of the United States serves as the head of this branch. The U.S. Congress comprises the legislative branch, which make the laws that the executive branch enforces. The judicial branch includes the U.S. Supreme Court that reviews laws and interprets the Constitution.
