The national headquarters of the Better Business Bureau is located in Chicago, Illinois, as of 2015. The Council of Better Business Bureaus, which coordinates the various BBB organizations, is located in Arlington, Virginia.

The Better Business Bureau formed in 1912 in order to build trust within the marketplace between consumers and businesses. The non-profit organization states that part of its mission is to set ethical business standards and behavior. The BBB has accredited nearly 400,000 business, and rates businesses on a scale from A+ to F, similar to a school system. The United States and Canada merged BBB operations in 2011.
