The national fuel surcharge rate varies for different types of oil based fuels. For a truckload, which is any shipment having a total weight of 20,000 pounds or more, the surcharge is 44.8 percent as of 2015.

For a light truckload, defined as any shipment having a total weight of 19,999 pounds or less, the surcharge is 22.40 percent. For jet fuel, the surcharge is 19 percent. For freight time-critical dedicated equipment, the fuel surcharge is 13.75 percent. The rate for time-critical dedicated equipment is 13.75 percent. Since these surcharges use percentages, they increase at a slower rate as the price of diesel in the United States increases.
