The largest naval base in the world, Naval Station Norfolk, is located in Norfolk, Virginia. It is home to 75 ships, 134 aircraft, 14 piers and 11 airplane hangars, as well as the main concentration of U.S. naval forces.

Naval Station Norfolk occupies approximately four miles of waterfront space and 11 miles of pier and wharf space. The station is the launching point for 275 flights per day and serves as the main center for naval logistics for the European and Caribbean theaters of operation.

Construction of the base began in 1917, shortly after the U.S. became involved in World War I.
