To become a Navy SEAL, get in shape, join the Navy, get a SEAL contract and go through training. You are required to be a male U.S. citizen 17 to 28 years old, meet the eyesight requirements, get the minimum ASVAB score and be eligible for secret security clearance.
- Get in shape
Regular Navy boot camp is not sufficient physical training to prepare for the SEAL physical screening test and SEAL training. Begin a personal fitness training regimen before joining the Navy.
- Join the Navy
Through a Navy recruiting office, take the ASVAB, undergo a physical exam and go through background screening at MEPS. Have an interview with a job counselor to find out if you have the qualifications to become a SEAL. Sign a contract to join the U.S. Navy.
- Pass the physical screening test
To receive a special SEAL contract, pass the physical screening test. To qualify, a SEAL candidate must consecutively swim 500 yards in under 12.5 minutes, do 50 push-ups, 50 curl-ups and 10 pull-ups, and run 1.5 miles in under 10.5 minutes.
- Undergo training
If you pass the physical screening test, move on to the eight-week SEAL prep course. From there, undergo BUDS training, which includes orientation, physical conditioning, combat diving, land warfare, jump school and qualification training. If you are unable to complete BUDS training, you are reclassified to another position in the Navy and can try again in two years.
