The National Drug Code (NDC) or the name of any drug may be obtained through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 'National Drug Code Directory' accessible through the agency's website. Searches may be executed by active ingredient, application number, labeler, NDC number or proprietary name.

The Drug Listing Act of 1972 requires establishments to provide the FDA with a complete list of all drugs manufactured, prepared or processed for commercial distribution; the FDA then assigns the three-segment NDC number to each drug as a universal identifier. The directory includes comprehensive information on each drug and is updated daily by the FDA.
