Do you need car insurance to apply for a vehicle registration?

Most states require drivers to submit proof of insurance in order to register a vehicle. Verification or proof of insurance in the form of an insurance proof card is generally acceptable. Some states may allow for the car to be registered and proof of insurance provided later.

In addition to providing proof of insurance, drivers may need to demonstrate that the coverage meets certain requirements, depending on the state. For example, some states require a minimum of bodily injury and liability coverage for property damage. No-fault states may require personal injury protection be obtained, and some may require that drivers purchase uninsured motorist coverage.
