Do you need insulin shots if you are prediabetic?

People who are prediabetic do not need insulin shots but may be prescribed oral medications such as metformin, according to WebMD. Metformin decreases the amount of sugar the liver produces in people who are resistant to insulin.
Treatment of prediabetes largely consists of increased exercise routines, weight loss, doctor visits every three to six months, and a healthier diet, says WebMD. Adequate amounts of sleep, a strong support network and a sense of commitment help people meet these prediabetes treatment goals. Exercise should occur five times a week for at least 30 minutes, and weight loss of just 10 to 14 pounds can decrease a 200-pound person's risk of getting diabetes by more than 50 percent.
