How much insulation do you need in an attic?

According to the Department of Energy, if there are less than 11 inches of fiberglass insulation or 8 inches of cellulose insulation, homeowners should consider adding more. Adding R-value insulation such as spray foam is more effective than fiberglass.
When adding insulation to the attic, it is important to also add it to the attic's access door. Be sure the attic is air sealed for best results.
Insulating the attic is especially important for those living in a cold climate. Heat rises and will leave the home through the attic if it lacks proper insulation. Those living in a warmer climate may benefit from adding extra insulation and attic radiant barriers along with extra insulation.
