Do you need a prescription to buy a treatment for chlamydia?

Treatment for chlamydia requires a prescription because antibiotics are the required treatment, as WebMD points out. Antibiotics frequently prescribed to treat chlamydia include amoxicillin, azithromycin, doxycycline, erythromycin and levofloxacin.

Because chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease, the sexual partners of the infected patient should also be treated, as should the newborn infants of infected mothers; pregnant women and infants have a smaller range of antibiotics available to them, according to WebMD. If the patient takes the antibiotics as prescribed, the chlamydia should be cured. In particular, azithromycin and doxycycline have a 95 percent success rate in curing chlamydia. Women who aren't treated with antibiotics run a risk of developing pelvic inflammatory disease or experiencing premature births, and men who aren't treated may develop infections or inflammations of the urethra, epididymis or rectum.
