What is needed to make your own tea bags?

Making homemade tea bags requires one conical coffee filter, a stapler, string and loose-leaf tea. To make tea bags with tags, also gather thick paper, such as construction paper or card stock.

To make a tea bag, cut the top inch off of the coffee filter, and then cut the remaining filter in half. Fill each half with a teaspoon of loose-leaf tea. Fold the long open side over twice, using small, tight folds. Then fold the two top corners in towards the center.

Place a piece of string over the folded corners, and fold the top down over the string. Secure the tea bag by stapling through the top fold and string. For a more eco-friendly tea bag, secure with thread instead of a staple.
