What paper is used to make tea bags?

Tea bag paper is made with a combination of thermoplastic fibers, cellulosic fibers and abaca. This type of paper has neutral odor and flavor, which makes it suitable for bagging tea. It also has a high wet strength to keep the herbs intact.

Tea bags were introduced in order to make the disposal of the remaining leaves easy. Some have strings attached to them to help in removing the bag after steeping. The first tea bags used were made of hand-sewn fabric, allowing the flavor to infuse the water without loose pieces of the herbs or leaves getting mixed with the beverage.
