A neutrophils blood test, or absolute neutrophil count, determines the number of neutrophils in the blood as part of a larger panel known as a complete blood count, according to the American Cancer Society. Typical ANC values in healthy adults range from 2,500 to 6,000 cells per microliter of blood.
Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell produced in the bone marrow that migrate throughout the body to fight infection, as stated by WebMD. A neutrophil count below 1,700 cells per microliter of blood is considered neutropenia and is associated with a high risk of infection, as reported by the Mayo Clinic.
