Why is Newark called "Brick City"?

The nickname "Brick City" for Newark, N.J., comes from several large, high-rise buildings made of stone and brick The buildings were constructed by the Newark Housing Authority as affordable housing for the city's residents.

The nickname Brick City has been popular since the 1970s. Other nicknames for Newark include "New Newark," "Gateway City" and "Renaissance Newark." The term Brick City has been used to name several newer buildings downtown, and the nickname has gained wide acceptance with the local media, as of October 2014.

"Brick City" is the name of a documentary produced in 2009 based on Mayor Cory Booker. The film is about how the city tries to combat its image as a high-crime area.
