As of 2015, newer antidepressants on the market include vilazodone and levomilnacipran, according to Current Psychiatry. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved these new medications in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

Vilazodone works as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, as well as a partial agonist of 5-HT1A presyn­aptic receptors in the brain, explains Current Psychiatry. Researchers believe this drug is best suited for patients with anxiety and depression, but the FDA has only approved it for the treatment of depression

Levomilnipran inhibits the neural reuptake of both serotonin and norepinephrine, according to Current Psychiatry. Prior to 2013, this drug was only approved as a medication for peripheral neuropathy and fibromyalgia pain.
