Fifth-generation fighter jets from around the world include the Chengdu J-20 in China, the Mitsubishi ATD-X in Japan, India's HAL AMCA and the Lockheed F-35 Lightning II in the United States. The fifth-generation of fighter aircraft began with the emergence of the Lockheed/Boeing F-22 Raptor.

Turkey's first fifth-generation fighter jet, known as the TAI TFX / FX is expected to be in service by 2025, as is India's Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. Russia is developing the PAK FA aircraft, which is meant to rival the United States' F-22 and F-35 fighter aircraft, with an in-service date set for 2017, the same year as China's J-20 stealth fighter aircraft.
