The U.S. Army Air Forces did not field any jet fighters in World War II. However, the United States developed a number of prototype jet aircraft during the war, and the most successful of these, the Lockheed P-80 Shooting Star, did eventually see combat during the Korean War.
In test flights, the prototype Shooting Star was capable of reaching air speeds of more than 500 miles per hour. In January of 1946, Colonel William H. Councill flew a P-80 nonstop across the United States at an average speed of 584 miles per hour, successfully completing the first transcontinental jet flight.
