Where do newts live?

Newts are generally found in North and South America and in the temperate areas of Africa, Asia and Europe. They prefer to live in moist areas near forests, under stones, in streams and under fallen logs.

Newts are aquatic amphibians and are often mistaken for salamanders, but not all salamanders are newts. Newts have three distinct lifestyle stages: larva, terrestrial juvenile and adult. These creatures may either live their entire lifecycles in the water, or they can be semiaquatic, which means they live on the land throughout the year but return to the water to breed and have their young.
