What is a Nicaraguan boa?

The Nicaraguan boa is a Central American boa subspecies. These boas reach up to 12 feet in length and weigh around 13 pounds, with females generally observed being larger and heavier than males. Nicaraguan boas live up to 30 years in the wild or 40 years in captivity.

Nicaraguan boas, which have the scientific name is Boa constrictor imperator, are often mistaken for other subspecies of boa constrictor because of their similar coloration and saddle pattern, despite their smaller size. Most commonly, Nicaraguan boas are mistaken for the Colombian red-tailed boa, which is nearly identical except for its red tail and lighter pigmentation.
