Where do non-fruit-bearing plum trees grow?

Ornamental plum trees that produce little or no fruit are hardy in temperature zones 4 through 9 (that is, moderate to relatively hot temperatures). Suitable zones vary with the variety chosen. These trees can produce fruit, but they usually bloom so early in the year that pollination is poor.

Ornamental plum trees are grown for their beautiful flowers and attractive foliage. Spraying the tree with a strong stream of water after the flowers begin to wilt removes the flowers and prevents the tree from bearing fruit. The tree can also be sprayed with a solution containing the hormone ethephon to prevent fruiting. Fruit from these trees is edible and is often attractive to birds.
