Feeling bloated before a period is normal for many woman, states WebMD. Hormonal changes are the likely cause for this feeling, and can also cause mood swings and tiredness.

Bloating is a part of premenstrual symptom (PMS) for a number of women. PMS includes the symptoms that happen in the week or two leading up to the beginning of a period. A few things can help with bloating, such as getting extra exercise or lessening salt intake, according to the Mayo Clinic. If that does not help, a diuretic may lessen the severity of symptoms. Coffee is a natural diuretic, but medications like Midol also work to help control bloating.
