After a liquid meal, the gastric emptying time is around 2 hours and 40 minutes. After a solid meal, the gastric emptying time is around 4 hours and 15 minutes. However, gastric emptying time varies greatly across healthy individuals.
There is no correlation between age, gender, or body mass index and speed of normal gastric emptying.
Delayed gastric emptying is called gastroparesis. Symptoms include nausea and vomiting. Gastroparesis can be caused by an obstruction of the stomach or a neurological problem. Rapid gastric emptying is called dumping syndrome. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting and dizziness shortly after eating. An hour or so later, the individual suffers weakness, sweating and dizziness.
