WebMD reports that the normal range for a hemoglobin A1c test is between 4 and 5.6 percent. Hemoglobin A1c levels from 5.7 to 6.4 percent indicate increased risk of diabetes. Results showing 6.5 percent or above indicate diabetes.
Higher readings of hemoglobin A1c are associated with increased risk for complications, so the goal for people with diabetes is to keep test readings below 7 percent, according to WebMD. People with diabetes are advised to take the test every three months to get levels under control. With well controlled diabetes, the time between tests ma increase to two years. Anemia, kidney disease and liver disease can alter the results of the A1c test.
