For women, normal serum iron levels are between 75 and 150 micrograms per deciliter of blood, according the Merck Manual for Health Care Professionals. Physicians often check iron levels with ferritin levels. The normal range for serum ferritin levels falls between 30 and 300 nanograms per milliliter.
Serum iron tests help physicians diagnose iron deficiency and iron overload, according to the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. Serum ferritin tests are also ordered to check iron stores. Iron deficiency can cause low serum iron and ferritin levels. High serum iron points to several conditions, such as lead poisoning, kidney disease and hemochromatosis.
