What is a normal protein level for a kidney?

A urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio less than 30 mg/g is considered normal, according to the American Kidney Fund. Healthy kidneys filter out protein, such as albumin, and prevent it from leaving the body with waste creatinine in urine. No protein, or only tiny amounts, are normally found in urine.

Protein in urine, also known as proteinuria or albuminuria, can be an indicator of kidney disease, says the American Kidney Fund. Proteinuria can lead to further kidney damage or failure. In extreme cases, a person may require dialysis or a kidney transplant. Kidney disease can be a result of high blood pressure or diabetes.
