Normal blood levels of testosterone vary between 300 and 1,000 to 1,200 nanograms per deciliter, according to WebMD. Testosterone is a sexual hormone responsible for the development of male sexual traits after puberty. Most men start experiencing a normal decline in testosterone levels after the age of 30.
Low testosterone levels can be caused by health issues such as testicle injury, testicular cancer, hormonal disorders, infections, Type 2 diabetes, obesity or chronic liver and kidney disease, explains WebMD. Treatment consists of administering testosterone in the form of injections, gels or patches. A new form of treatment involves implanting pellets under the skin of the buttocks, slowly releasing testosterone for three to four months.
