The northern plains of India comprise a large, flat and fertile region that runs across the northern and eastern areas of India into Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. The Ganges River flows through the region, which is also known as the Indo-Gangetic Plain or the North Indian River Plain.
Most of the agriculture in India takes place in the northern plains region. Farmers grow major crops, such as wheat, rice, maize, sugar cane and cotton, in rotation to maintain the fertility of the soil. Large cities in the region include Islamabad, Lahore, Delhi, Dhaka and Jaipur. The region is one of the more densely populated parts of the world.
