What is number sense?

Number sense is what an education professional refers to as a student's ability to understand how numbers work in both the classroom and real world settings. This refers to the level in which the student is at in his math education.

There are five components in measuring number sense. The first is understanding the meaning of numbering. The second is the relationships that exist between numbers. Number magnitude is the third component; and, understanding operations with numbers is the fourth component. The fifth component is being aware of referents for numbers and quantities. Students that lack a strong number sense can struggle with complex math.
