As of April 2015, numbers beginning with 844 are toll-free numbers in the United States. The 844 toll-free code became available in 2013, when the Federal Communications Commission added the code to the toll-free list in response to a high demand for toll-free numbers.

The 844 toll-free code was made available earlier than its original proposed date of Feb. 15, 2014, after a written recommendation was made by Ms. Gina Perini, the Chief Administrative Officer and General Counsel of SMS/800, Inc. Toll-free 844 numbers are functionally the same as other toll-free number prefixes and are available for vanity number formats, such as 1-844-FLOWERS.
