Is nutsedge a type of grass?

Nutsedge, also known as yellow nut-grass, is not a grass but it resembles one. It has edible tubers; its scientific name is Cyperus esculentus. Esculentus means "edible."

In many places, nutsedge is considered a weed. The flowers of nutsedge have yellow-green scales and the flower branches emerge in rays from the top of the triangular stem. The flower clusters are shaped very much like a bottle brush and the bracts are leaf-like. The plant is a perennial and a member of the sedge family.

Nutsedge grows from 8 inches to 3 feet tall and does best in damp, sandy soil.
