What are OBD2 codes?

On-board diagnostics 2, or OBD2, codes are standardized sets of diagnostic information about events occurring in a vehicle. OBD2 codes can be read using a scanning device to troubleshoot vehicle problems or obtain vehicle information.
The most commonly read OBD2 codes are diagnostic troubleshooting codes. The OBD2 standard contains reserved code numbers for generic messages across all vehicle platforms. OBD2 also has provisions for manufacturer-specific codes. OBD2 codes are stored in the vehicle's electronic control unit until requested to clear by an OBD2 scanner. Check with the vehicle's shop repair manual for more information on vehicle specific OBD2 codes.
