How do you obtain a business license?

To obtain a business license, use the U.S. Small Business Administration's Permit Me tool to find the types of licenses that are required for your state and type of business. Download the forms, fill them out and send them in with any required documentation to receive your license.

1. Research state licensing requirements

   Open the U.S. Small Business Administration's Permit Me tool at http://SBA.gov/licenses-and-permits. Enter your zip code, and select your business type from the drop-down menu. If the tool does not return a specific license, look through the list of industries to find the correct option. Keep in mind that not all businesses require licenses.

2. Download any applicable forms

   If your business requires a license, click on the Permit Me results to read about the application process. If you see a link to application forms, download them, fill them out and send them in to the correct address. Include any identification or documentation as directed in the application instructions.

3. Call for more information

   If the Permit Me tool returns a page with a phone number, call the number, and ask about obtaining a license in your area. If the tool does not return any results, call your local courthouse to find out about required licenses.
