The Pacific Ocean borders California. This ocean is the largest on Earth and extends from Antarctica to Asia and from Australia and to the Americas. In total, the Pacific Ocean covers approximately 46 percent of the Earth's surface.
The coastal area of California that borders the Pacific Ocean is very fertile. Temperatures in the part of the Pacific Ocean that borders California rarely exceed 65 degrees Fahrenheit; therefore, much of the diverse animal life in these waters resembles animal life in the Arctic. The low temperatures also bring many dissolved nutrients to the California coast, which is beneficial for farmers in the central part of the state.
