Hebrew and Arabic are the official languages of Israel. A majority of the population speaks Hebrew, but the county also has a sizable Arabic-speaking minority. Many Israelis also speak English.
In Israel, many people also speak minority languages that do not have official status. Ethnologue estimates that Israel is home to a total of 35 languages that include Yiddish, standard German, Spanish, French, Czech, western Yiddish, Iranian Persian, Italian, Amharic, Bukharic, Hulaulá, Hunagarian and Russian. As a homeland for Jewish people around the world, Israel is a magnet for immigration, which has led to its status as a linguistic melting pot.
