How old is Santa Claus?

The holiday character of Santa Claus is based on St. Nicholas, a Christian saint who was born in Turkey in 280 A.D. and believed to have died in 343 A.D. Dutch immigrants introduced his legacy to the United States in the 1700s, and the tradition of Santa Claus was born.

The Dutch originally celebrated the legacy of Santa Claus during the first week of December, but the time frame gradually expanded until the famous man became associated with Christmas. In the late 1800s, artists began imagining Santa Claus as a figure who came down chimneys and rode in a sleigh pulled by reindeer.
