Is there a Santa Claus?

While the jolly old man traditionally seen at Christmas does not actually exist, his legend is traced back to a 3rd Century monk named St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was born around 280 A.D. in what is now known as Turkey.

The legend of Santa Claus grew due to the supposed piety and kindness of St. Nicholas, who is said to have given away all of his wealth and possessions and traveled through the country helping those less fortunate. St. Nicholas did not become popular in the United States until 1773, however, when Dutch immigrant families began gathering to honor the anniversary of the Saint's death.
