Southern gospel music is a genre of music that originated in the Southeastern United States in the early part of the 20th century. It is intertwined with the Christian faith and its lyrics revolve around biblical teachings and spiritual values.
Southern gospel music is sometimes called "quartet music" as it was traditionally performed by four men, usually accompanied by piano or guitar. In some regions the banjo also joined in the arrangement. The first of such quartets was established by James D. Vaughan of Tennessee in 1910. Notable artists include The Blackwood Brothers, The Stamps Quartet and The Cathedral Quartet.
