Where do old TVs end up after disposal?

Old TVs usually go to a local landfill or recycling facility when people dispose of them. However, TVs that end up in a landfill pose a risk to the environment, since they contain many toxic substances.
Some of the harmful substances TVs contain include lead, brominated flame-retardants, and heavy metals such as cadmium and mercury. Certain TVs also contain krypton-85, although the isotope's radiation level is low enough to not cause any significant problems.
One company that people can contact when they want to dispose of their TVs is 1-800-GOT-JUNK, as of 2015. This company recycles TVs whenever possible, along with other household objects such as bicycles, mattresses and refrigerators.
